Reflex peristalsis of the intestine.

چکیده

A SOLID object introduced into the intestine induces powerful contractions of the circular muscles which transport the object in an aboral direction. This response has been known for a long time (I-S). In the present paper it will be described in greater detail on the basis of visual observations and records of action potentials. In a subsequent paper the underlying neuromuscular mechanism will be analyzed.

THE ROLE OF NON-ADRENERGIC NON-CHOLINERGIC SYSTEM IN THE PERISTALTIC REFLEX OF GUINE A PIG ILEUM

The effect of some endogenous components -endogenous opiates, cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and somatostatin-as inhibitory or excitatory transmitters in the local nervous pathways involved in peristaltic responses was examined. The peristaltic reflex was studied using a modification of the Trendelenberg preparation. In each preparation, the luminal distens...

Stimulative effect of sodium nitroprusside on peristaltic reflex in isolated guinea pig ileal segments.

Intestinal segments obtained from guinea pig ileum were set up in an organ bath to record peristaltic responses to distension by a pressure rise in the lumen. The effects of drugs applied in the bathing medium on the peristaltic responses were examined. Sodium nitroprusside (10(-9) M to 10(-5) M) stimulated the peristaltic reflex. Nitroglycerin (10(-7) M) was similarly effective in stimulating ...

Enteric reflexes and nitric oxide in the fish intestine

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the possible regulation of peristalsis in the intestine of the Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. For this purpose, the mid intestine was dissected out and placed in a partitioned bath. Balloon distension (0.10.4 ml) and intramural field stimulation (8 Hz, 10 V) were carried out and the responses of the circular muscle were recorded 1.5 cm orally and a...

Regulation and dysregulation of esophageal peristalsis by the integrated function of circular and longitudinal muscle layers in health and disease.

Muscularis propria throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus is comprised of circular and longitudinal muscle layers. Based on the studies conducted in the colon and the small intestine, for more than a century, it has been debated whether the two muscle layers contract synchronously or reciprocally during the ascending contraction and descending relaxation of the per...

Mechanisms of reflexes induced by esophageal distension.

We investigated the mechanisms of esophageal distension-induced reflexes in decerebrate cats. Slow air esophageal distension activated esophago-upper esophageal sphincter (UES) contractile reflex (EUCR) and secondary peristalsis (2P). Rapid air distension activated esophago-UES relaxation reflex (EURR), esophago-glottal closure reflex (EGCR), esophago-hyoid distraction reflex (EHDR), and esopha...
